Preparation for the Worlds

Following the exciting news that Imperial Cavalier (Archie) and I have been selected for the Worlds, life has been busy! I competed at Stockland Lovell Horse Trials last weekend and won the intermediate with Patsy Mason’s King Albert. I also had a catch ride in the open novice on a friends horse and had a win with him too…so that was a good day at the office!

Following one day at home we then left at 2am (!) and drove up to Tremlows Stud in Shropshire where Kings Temptress, who was carrying an eight day old embryo, was flushed. The embryo has now been planted in a recipient mare and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it implants successfully! We then drove on to Addington to the first GB squad training where we had dressage and jumping lessons over two days, plus Liz Brown the team vet had a thorough check of the six horses. Archie was in top form…!

The following day we left early from Addington and drove to Cambridge to The College of East Anglia where I did two demos and plenty of signing during the day and eventually got home to Devon at 11pm.

Another single day at home today before leaving at 3.30am for Aston le Walls Horse Trials tomorrow with three horses… Archie is running at Aston, then the British Open Champs at Gatcombe in two weeks time, then finally Highclere Horse Trials at the end of Aug in preparation for the World games mid Sept. Apache Sauce and Kings Temptress are aiming for Burghley Horse Trials, so there are lots of exciting events ahead.

About Mary King

Mary King went to her first Badminton in 1985, finishing in seventh place, and finally won the event in 1992 with her horse, King William. She later won the event again in 2000 with Star Appeal. In 2001, whilst exercising horses at her home, she had a fall which broke her neck. However, less than a year later she was back at the top of the sport recording top ten placings at major international events including a 3rd placing at Burghley Four Star on her great campaigner King Solomon III. She has won four team gold medals at World Equestrian Games and European Championships. She has been British Champion four times, more than anyone to date. King has also represented Britain in five Olympic Games: 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004. She was in the Olympic team for 2008 with Call Again Cavalier who has since died, but taking Imperial Cavalier as reserve, as they moved into third place with team bronze. The three day event is being held in Hong Kong rather than Beijing. She married Alan King (known as David King) in 1995 and lives with him and their two children, Emily and Freddie, in Salcombe Regis, Devon.
