8 Ways To Have A MoreConscious Christmas

Tis’ the season of peace on earth, goodwill to all and kindness towards our planet. If the festive frenzy has you questioning if there is a happier, healthier and more sustainable way to enjoy Christmas, read on.

Christmas can be chaos. There’s the never-ending to-do list, flurry of people to see, supermarket delivery slot to secure and pile of presents to wrap (and then put away). But in this shifting world, perhaps it’s time to take a slower approach to silly season? Don’t let your merry and bright mood turn into eco-anxiety. Let your heart be light. Here are a few future focused ideas to inspire you…

1. Pick Thoughtful, Quality Presents

To say the countryside is dear to us, is an understatement. We look to its farmland, rivers, woods and meadows for inspiration and aim to brighten our customers lives with its joy. Respecting and considering the environment we draw inspiration from is fundamental to our business.

[We] won’t ask for much this Christmas. Just do your bit and avoid gifts going to landfill by giving something they truly want. Buy less (yes, we did just say that), choose something meaningful and pick presents that will stand the test of time.

We’re proud of the quality of our products. We build-to-last and all our garments provide many years of use and can often be passed-on or handed-down.

2. Seek Out Sustainable Materials

The impact we’re all having on the environment and our planet is reaching tipping point. The bells are ringing out and we’re listening at Joules, which is why we’re working hard behind the scenes to shift to using only sustainable and recycled materials by the end 2022.

Why not pick a present made from sustainable materials to reduce your impact on the environment this year?

3. Choose A Real Tree: Replant And Reuse

“But wait”, you might be thinking, “a plastic tree can be reused year after year”. Well, yes, and I’m sure you’ll invest in one to last. But eventually all that plastic will ultimately end up in landfill. A real tree keeps giving back to our planet and has a lower carbon footprint.

If you opt for a potted variety with a healthy root ball, you can replant your Christmas tree too, benefiting the environment as it cleans the air as it grows. Find out more here about our pledge to plant 250,000 trees by 2022 with the Woodland Trust, to help support the fight against climate change.

A cut tree can still benefit nature post-Christmas. Why not place it in the garden to provide a habitat for wildlife and birds through the winter months? And if you can’t reuse, recycle. Contact your local waste management about tree collection services. Some turn it into mulch that can be spread on the garden.

4. Wrap Well

Recyclable wrapping paper has gone glam. Non laminated and free from plastic, glitter or foil, there are now so many beautifully printed, guilt-free designs. But brown paper packages tied with string and a sprig of foliage will always have a place in our heart.

We’ve also be working hard to reduce and remove plastic from our packaging and stores. We’ve replaced our hangers with wood, 100% of in-house designed paper and card packaging is FSC certified, recycled and recyclable and we’ve pledged that by the end of 2022 all in bound & out bound packaging will meet the same standard. Learn more about our progress here.

5. Swap Disposable For Reusable

We’ve all been there, stuck in the post-Christmas queue at the local recycling centre, tensions running high, wondering if there is another way. For your sanity and for the sake of the planet, we challenge you to see if you can find a sustainable swap for disposable buys this season.

From decorations and advent calendars to bakeware and gift boxes, reusable options are on this rise.

6. Give Something Back

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me… If you’re struggling for gift ideas for the person who has everything, why not donate to a charity and give to someone who has less?

7. A Kinder Christmas Clear-Out

We are only too aware of the impact the industry we are part of has on the environment. Some reports suggest that nearly two-thirds of clothing created by the retail industry overall end up in incinerators or landfill within a year of being produced! Why tell you this? Because it’s Christmas, and at Christmas you tell the truth.

Rather than reach straight for the bin bag, question whether your garment can give more wear, perhaps with a little care and repair? Also check out our guides for caring for knitwearleatherdenim and wellies, to ensure you get the most use out of your new Christmas present.

Doesn’t fit? Don’t just chuck it in the bin. Spread a little post-Christmas cheer by passing it on. We build-to-last, so our clothing is always hand me down worthy.

So your discarded clothing could protect the planet and help beat poverty for good. Strange, isn’t it? Each man’s life touches so many other lives.

8.  Spend Time In Nature

First, we’ll make snow angels for two hours, then we’ll go ice skating, then we’ll eat a whole roll of cookie dough as fast as we can, and then we’ll snuggle.

Amid all the festive frenzy, make time to connect with nature, we promise you’ll feel better for it.

Why not take a walk? Even better with a friend. Even better if you can take a four-legged friend (Merry Christmas, you filthy animal).

So what positive changes will you make this Christmas to make a lasting difference to the people around you and your planet?

Amid all the festive frenzy, make time to connect with nature, we promise you’ll feel better for it.

We’re not perfect, we’re on a journey. But we’re proud to create distinctive products made with care, consideration and respect. Find out more about our Responsibly Joules approach here.

of course, conscious living is not just for Christmas. Christmas isn’t just a day, it’s a frame of mind. This year, why not make a pledge to honour Christmas in [your] heart and try to keep it all the year to contribute to positive change?
