Pancakes always go down a treat with the little ones, especially when they can get involved in the making! But if you’re getting a little tired of same-old flat pancakes slapped on a plate, we’ve whipped up these recipes for animal-shaped pancakes that are sure to raise a smile or three.
We know you’ve probably made hundreds of pancakes before, so we won’t bore you with the classic eggs, flour and milk recipe you’ve been using for years. And no, we definitely won’t judge if you buy your pancakes ready-made! But if you’d like to try a slightly healthier option for the little ones, this is one of our favourite alternative pancake recipes — plus, it’s dairy and flour free.
Half a mug of oats
2 eggs
1 banana
4tbsp apple sauce
1tsp vanilla extract
½tsp cinnamon
½tsp baking powder
A blender
METHOD:
This recipe really couldn’t be simpler! Just pop the oats into a blender and blitz until ground, then add all the remaining ingredients and blitz until smooth!
01. Make eight round pancakes of varying sizes: five small, three medium and one large. If you’re using bought pancakes, use a cookie cutter or a knife to make the different sizes.
02. Drizzle honey on the centre of a plate. You can use a little honey to help the other pancakes stick too if you like.
03. Place the largest pancake in the middle of the plate first, then place the three medium pancakes overlapping it to make a head and two feet.
04. Take two of the smaller pancakes and place them at either sides of the large pancake to make arms, and add another towards the bottom of the head to make a muzzle.
05. Tuck the two remaining smaller pancakes behind the head to make ears.
06. Cut up a banana, take one slice and cut it in half (don’t worry, you can save all the fruit you don’t use and put it in a bowl to eat on the side!). Put each half in front of each ear.
07. Take three blueberries and place them on the bear’s face to make a nose and eyes.
08. Use raisins to make little paws on the bear’s feet.

06. Cut the second medium pancake in half and shape with a knife to make ear shapes, and place these on top of the head.
07. Take two slices of banana and place one on the body to make a tail. Cut the other into halves, and place at the top of the feet to make paws.
08. Place three raisins under each of the banana slices to complete the paws.
01. Make four round pancakes of varying sizes: one large and three small.
02. Drizzle honey on the centre of a plate.
03. Place the first smaller pancake at the top of the plate to make the head, leaving room for antennae.
04. Use a fluted cookie cutter to add zig-zagged edges to the remaining two smaller pancakes, and place them at the sides of the plate to make wings.
05. Place the large pancake in the middle of the place so that it overlaps the edges of the head and wings.
06. Use blueberries to make stripes across the body of the bee, then add two to the head to make eyes, and another two just above the head for the antennae.
07. Cut a slice of banana in half and place them on top of the wings.
08. Finally, use chocolate sauce to draw a smile, a stinger and antenna stalks.
