It goes without saying that this year’s Father’s Day is quite unlike any we’ve had before. With some of us far away from our father figures, and some unable to celebrate how they usually would (the word ‘pub’ springs to mind!), it’s more important than ever to show how much you love them and appreciate them, no matter where they may be.
Read on for inspiration and ideas on how to make your Father’s Day gifts that little bit more personal…
This one isn’t just for the little ones – making your own present or card for your dad is a sure-fire way to show him how much you mean to him. Use the skills already in your arsenal, like sewing, scrapbooking or even baking, or take time to learn a new skill for him. An easy craft to try is Pebble Art: making pictures out of stones. All you have to do is go out into the garden and find a good selection of pebbles. You’ll need ones to make heads, and ones to make bodies so keep this in mind, and the smoother the better. Wash the stones and your hands well, then lay them out to make little people – you can make your whole family, just a portrait of you and your dad, and you can even include a dog! Stick them down to whatever you’d like to put them on (a canvas, a card, in a box-style photo frame) with double-sided tape or a hot glue and make sure they’re all stuck down securely. You can add little stick arms and legs (or ears for dogs!) if you like, or you can just keep it plain and simple. The only limit is your imagination!
If it feels like you send the same Father’s Day card with the same joke in every year, it’s time to step it up with a truly personal card that captures his personality and the special bond you share. Our Friends of Joules seller Marina B Designs has a lovely selection of personalisable cards that he can treasure forever, or you could have a go at making your own. Steer away from the usual name at the top, sentence in the middle, name at the bottom format that you usually go with and try writing something from the heart – it doesn’t have to be a poem to rival Shakespeare’s sonnets, but try to scribble down how you feel about them and how much you appreciate all they do for you. You could even try your hand at calligraphy, or faux calligraphy if you don’t feel like investing in a fancy pen! Faux calligraphy is where you simply trace out some fancy lettering and fill it in with an ordinary black pen. It gives a very similar effect to what you’d get with a quill and ink but no special skills are needed!
Just like a personalised card, giving a personalised gift is a wonderful gesture to show him how much your care (no craft skills needed!). Our Friends of Joules have a huge selection of gifts that can be made totally unique with a name, initials or a message, from wallets and stationery to bears and books. These aprons from our friend Fred and Noah are perfect for kings of the grill and their little royal subjects (they come in matching children’s sizes too!), and for the discernible gentleman this personalised leather hip flask from our friend Hord might just come back to you as a treasured hand-me-down in years to come!
