If you’re still unsure who the Gruffalo is and how he came about, we’ve answered a few commonly asked questions below so you can get familiar with our fury friend.

What is The Gruffalo?

The Gruffalo is a popular children’s picture book, written in 1999. The Gruffalo story was inspired by the Chinese folk tale, ‘The Fox that Borrows the Terror of a Tiger’ however the tiger was replaced by a Gruffalo as “Gruffalo” rhymes with “Oh help! Oh no!”.

What is the story of The Gruffalo?

The Gruffalo story follows the adventures of a clever mouse travelling through the woods, telling tales of his imaginary Gruffalo friend to scare off predators who step in his path. Unbeknown to the mouse, the Gruffalo exists and when the mouse comes face to face with the Gruffalo, the mouse leads the Gruffalo to the frightened predators who run away, tricking the Gruffalo into thinking they’re scared of the mouse.

What is the message of The Gruffalo?

The key message of The Gruffalo is that wit is more powerful than size and scariness. The quick-witted mouse manages to protect himself by convincing the Gruffalo he is a big bad mouse.

What is the Gruffalo scared of?

The Gruffalo becomes scared of the mouse after the mouse convinces the Gruffalo into thinking much larger predators live in fear of him. The mouse then declares his favourite food is “Gruffalo crumble” causing the Gruffalo to run and hide out of fear of being eaten.

Who wrote The Gruffalo?

The Gruffalo was written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Donaldson is a critically acclaimed author who has written some of the best loved children’s books around. She is inspired by anything and everything including fairy stories, childhood memories and even folk tales.
