The newest charity to be added to the Charitably Joules fold is American Forests, who we have been working with to further their mission of restoring our American forests and woodlands — as lovers of the countryside, this is a cause very close to our hearts here at Joules.
American Forests is the United States’ oldest national non-profit conservation organization whose mission is to restore threatened forest ecosystems and inspire people to value and protect urban and wildland forests. Founded in 1875, they helped create the U.S. Forest Service in the early 1900s, and in 2018, they won a decade-long campaign persuading Congress to provide stable funding for preventing and fighting forest fires.
Now, they are focused on building a reforestation movement in America, from cities to large landscapes. You can find out more about American Forests and their work here.
Since its inception, American Forests has…
We have a whole host of activities planned to support American Forests (so keep your eyes peeled!) and we’re aiming to plant 20,000 trees by 2022 in partnership with American Forests.
From social media competitions where we’ll plant a tree for every entry to our Green Monday event where we’ll plant a tree for every unit sold, we can’t wait to show you what we’ve got planned!
The benefits of forests, both in cities and large landscapes, are vast. For starters, forests are the best nature-based solution to climate change. Annually in the United States, forests and forest products capture and store almost 15% of the country’s carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels.
Forests have tremendous water benefits as well, acting like a sponge. Trees and the surrounding soil absorb rainfall and melted snow, reducing the risk of extreme flooding. Also, the water absorbed eventually flows into rivers and streams that provide us with a steady supply of water. Wildlife species depend on forests for survival, with 80% of land-dwelling species living in them.
One of the most important benefits of trees, though, is for the health and wellness of people. Trees absorb air pollutants, prevent asthma, lower energy bills, cool temperatures, and prevent flooding. The need for protecting our forests has never been so urgent.
