Signs of Spring: How many have you spotted?

9th February 2018

We love winter, we really do, but it can go on… so we’re looking forward to spring. In fact, we’ve actually started to notice a few signs that a new season isn’t that far away – and we’re excited.

1. Are you having a daff?

One of the earliest signs of spring, the delightful daffodil is making its annual return to our gardens and roadsides. From February through to May, these bright yellow bulbs will be bursting into life and heralding the start of spring as they spread from the south to the rest of the country.

2. Getting buzzy

Bees are a true sign that warmer weather is on the horizon. On milder days in spring, queen bumblebees will be seen (literally) bumbling around the garden and mining bees will emerge from beneath the earth leaving little piles of soil where they have made their way back out into the world.

3. The nest song in the world

It will only take a few days for most birds to build their nests and each is unique to every species. If you keep a lookout during late March and April, you should be able to see this fascinating feat taking place around you. You should also be able to hear the dawn chorus getting louder the further we go into spring – it should be at its loudest at the start of May.

4. Can you smell garlic?

If you take a woodland walk during spring, you might notice the distinctive smell of garlic. Wild garlic has bright green leaves that will appear throughout March, followed by white flowers. And if you’re a fan of garlic, you’re in for a treat as wild garlic can be used in a number of ways from pesto to pies and soups to salads.

5. Hare and Now

One of the great signs of the arrival of spring is the so-called ‘mad March hare’ – as these shy and reclusive creatures can be spotted ‘boxing’ in open fields throughout the mating season. And here’s a tip, if you don’t see a hare or two out in the countryside, you’re sure to see one sitting proudly on our clothing and accessories. Keep your eyes peeled.

6. Ready, Set… Mow!

The sound of a lawn mower, followed by the intoxicating smell of freshly cut grass, is a sign of spring (and summer!) that we can’t wait for.

7. Eating and Drinking… Outside!

It might take a brave soul at first, and coupled with that bravery might be a few layers – but sooner rather than later benches in parks and pub gardens will full of people soaking up the sun and welcoming the spring and summer in style.
