STARGAZING: TURNING TO THE NIGHT SKY FOR INSPIRATION

Humans have been intrinsically drawn to the night skies since time immemorial. Philosophers, poets, artists, scientists, theologists and writers have drawn inspiration from and found wonder in the sky at night.

To create our new Stargazing print, we looked up to the constellations of the Northern Hemisphere and their formation in the sky, inspired both the inky star print and the placement of the indigo foliage and floral print.

With the clocks going back and the nights drawing in, we’re turning our attention to the night sky and the beauty that lies within.

We’ve been chatting to people who live and breathe the spirit of each of the prints our designers have created, and next up is Astrologer Francesca Oddie. With a book deal under her belt and having performed readings at events up and down the country, Fran is as inspired by the night sky as our designers are. We asked her to tell us all about it.

Where did your journey with astrology begin?

Astrology has always been part of my life. From a really young age, I have always found myself almost obsessively making links between numbers and patterns and wondering what really defines us, and makes us who we are.

“When I was about four, I saw the word ‘Sagittarius’ written on keyring in a store, and it intrigued me so much. This was my first tentative step into the world of astrology, and it set me off on a journey of discovery and a lifelong passion. During primary school, I remember vividly remembering everyone’s birthday and making correlations between their birthdays and characteristics. I would obsessively read whatever I could and collect not only birthdays but times of birth from everyone.

“This interest carried me through my school life and university. When I moved to Italy a clairvoyant I met told me my rising sign and said that I would grow to be an astrologer. The rest, they say, is history!”

Why do you think it’s important to connect with the planets and stars?

“The planets and stars are just nature – just like the trees and the wind. Just like how each morning we’ll look out the window and observe that it’s raining and pack a brolly for our journey to work, it’s a good idea to know and recognise the astrological weather, too.

“Connecting with the planets and stars can help you recognise whether you’re going through a period of contraction or joy and using this knowledge to adjust your life accordingly, so you don’t end up with figuratively soaking wet feet. It’s important to recognise which areas of your life need work to look after yourself and be the best version of yourself you can be.

“Astrology teaches us so much about ourselves, so you can learn a lot by connecting with the planets and stars. Primarily, your disposition and psychology, which extends into your physique, your diet, your relationships, your talents and your weaknesses.

“While astrology is not a determined math, there are certain traits that are more defined than others – so, a Cancerian will always want to nurture and Leos will always want to be creative.”

What has astrology taught you about yourself, and how does the night sky inspire you?

“Well, I’m a Sagittarius, so that is what predominately defines me. My life is all about freedom, but I will always say what I think. Being a Sagittarius has also led me to an unstoppable curiosity, especially when it comes to my place in the world internationally. I’ve lived abroad and I especially enjoy different cultures and learning about. However, I’m rising Gemini, I have the moon in Taurus, and I have five planets in Capricorn, so I’m also ambitious and I hate change. So those two traits are always at odds, so that’s something I have to work really hard at every day. Astrology has helped me to understand that about myself, and I truly believe that it can be such a force for good in everyone’s lives if they connect with it.”
