The most important thing with any equestrian or Country event, is of course, practicality. There is nothing worse than getting caught out with shoes that are rubbing, or not enough layers!

Equestrian fashion is characterised by its elegant, practical, and sophisticated elements, making it a great opportunity to invest in timeless pieces that will remain fashionable season after season. The Blazer

The perfect place to start is a fitted jacket or blazer. Opting for wool or tweed in neutral colours will effortlessly compliment any outfit, but also last in your wardrobe for many years to come. As we head out of August and into September, the weather has a tendency to change, and taking a blazer or jacket with you to Burghley will not only finish off your outfit beautifully, but will also be that extra layer should the weather be windy or rainy! The classic fabric and tailored silhouette of a tweed jacket/blazer encompasses classic equestrian style, with a polished country look. It can help to elevate any outfit, but remains an ever practical piece!

Think Layers

Layering is always a good idea for a Horse Trials, as this allows you to add or remove as required! Consider incorporating lightweight gilets, tank tops or raincoats into your outfit.

A white shirt is a great base for a Horse Trials outfit. A classic white shirt is elegant and traditional for Country styling, but also its simplicity allows a plain base to build the rest of your outfit from. Pair with a tailored blazer or jacket and simple black or white jeans and boots. A white shirt remains a wardrobe staple, but if you want to opt for a slight twist on the classic, why not consider a white or cream blouse, with an equestrian or Country print.

Jeans, skirts or shorts are all appropriate for Burghley Horse Trials, and it is best to consider the weather, as to which one to go for. Black and white jeans can be an easy base to build your outfit from, and ooze classic equestrian styling, whilst a tweed skirt is another option, creating a perfectly put together Country style.

Should the weather be a brighter and warmer one – a dress can always be a comfortable but stylish outfit idea. With anything from beautiful Country prints, to plain white dresses, confidence and sophistication oozes from this style of outfit. They can be teamed with tall boots and a tweed blazer for cooler days, or deck shoes or loafers for sunnier weather.

Don’t forget your footwear

When it comes to footwear, comfort and practicality is key! The weather and ground can be unpredictable, and it is always best to consider the conditions when it comes to footwear! Whether you opt for a pair of wellies, boots or deck shoes, the main thing is comfort! There is nothing worse than shoes rubbing, so if you have a new pair of shoes, make sure you break them in first and check they won’t rub as Burghley is a long day! Classic equestrian and Country styles nods towards a pair of suede or leather tall boots, which are not only timeless, but great investment pieces that will last in your wardrobe for many events to come.

Add accessories for a final touch

To complete your outfit, consider accessories which will add the finishing touch. A silk scarf, belt and fedora or flat cap are beautiful ways to elevate your outfit. Look for accessories with subtle nods towards equestrian theming, as a way to incorporate the event into your outfit. A comfortable shoulder bag is a good addition, especially if you are heading to Burghley on cross-country day! It is also a good idea to be prepared with both sunglasses and an umbrella – we don’t want to be caught out!
